Space that Works
‘Third Space’ isn’t a new expression but it’s one we are hearing more about all the time. So what is it? It’s simply a place to work which isn’t an office (first space) and isn’t home (second space). A place where people can work productively whilst in a sociable and relaxed environment. The most obvious example and a company who have executed this is Starbucks. Free Wi-Fi, power outlets, comfortable seating, and of course great coffee are just some of the reasons why they do it so well.
This instant gratification of flexible working is making us more demanding and is why we are now seeing the ‘third space’ concept entering into the workplace. A recent research trip to London allowed us to visit some of the most innovative furniture companies and see the award winning key pieces. From acoustic pods, self-contained meeting areas and tables with cable management systems, each item had been designed with flexibility and collaborative working in mind.
This has inspired us to look at our own boardroom and ways we can combine clever design to create a practical and inviting environment for us and our clients.
