The National Physical Laboratory (NPL), founded in 1900, is the UK’s National Measurement Institute and one of the top three measurement institutes in the world. As a world-leading centre of excellence, NPL delivers social and economic impact through their scientific discoveries and real-world applications. Each year they welcome over 21,000 visitors from all around the world whose first impression of NPL is the reception area; this is where Triad came in.
One of the main challenges NPL had with their reception area was that it felt cold and clinical, and didn’t promote the innovation or diversity of their research. Our brief was to create a reception that provides the wow factor for visitors and a space that makes staff feel proud to work there. One of the key aims was for the space to tell a story from when it first opened in 1900 through to what is being worked on today and into the future.
From our first meeting, we developed an initial concept and showed visuals for the areas we thought were key to address. The main approach uses shards and lines which overlap and create a dynamic feel whilst the white lines and dots add clarity and precision. Brought together with the vibrant colours it creates an explosion of visions and a mind map of ideas.
Once the concept had been agreed, we worked closely with a range of production and installation partners from graphics, digital equipment and furniture which all came together to make our vision a reality.
We made the most of the vibrant corporate colour palette as you can see from the images below which have made a dramatic difference to what previously existed.
The completed reception area now includes a bespoke curved desk, vibrant glass panels with key messaging, a timeline wall with removable foamex panels, a 6 x 55” video wall and a 9m feature wall. The area has been finished off with a curved seating area and meeting booth pods.
The whole project was delivered from initial concept approval to launch in under 3 months!
