National Nuclear Laboratory Virtual Tour
The National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) plays a key role in the global nuclear industry through authoritative research and technical support aimed at improving and reducing the cost of nuclear decommissioning. NNL came to us to ask us to consider the best format to explain and promote these services.
We designed, modelled and built a full HD Virtual Tour of the NNL facilities, including the two main laboratories in which much of the research and testing processes takes place.
Modelling and animation was the obvious format to represent the processes because it is simply not possible to photograph them as they take place in highly secure vaults due to the highly radioactive nature of the materials.
In order for us to build the models and animate the processes, many of the processes had to be explained to us verbally, and from that we sketched, storyboarded, modelled and animated in an iterative process until we got all the details right.
The modelled animation sequences were then embedded in a menu driven html5 structure so the visitor could choose their path through the Tour.
The Tour was very well received, and is being used as a promotional as well as educational tool.
